In a major collaboration, Toray Industries and Yoshida recently joined forces to develop Tanker bag materials using Ecodear N510, a 100% plant-based nylon fiber. Yoshida's well-known brand, Porter, has been producing and selling the Tanker line of handbags for the past 40 years.

Ecodear N510 is composed of 100% bio-based synthetic polymers and meets the ISO 16620-1:2015 standard for bio-based content in plastics.

The outer fabric of these bags will be made from Ecodear 510, a material obtained by polymerizing and spinning sebacic acid from castor oil and pentamethylene diamine from corn.Ecodear N510 differs from other vegetable-based nylons in its superior melting point and dimensional stability, which gives it strong and heat-resistant properties like those of nylon 6. Since its commercialization in 2022, Toray has been actively exploring various new applications for this material as part of its commitment to sustainability.

The goal of this collaboration was to combine the advantages of a plant-based material with the utility of Ecodear N510 in tanker production lines. Toray's expertise in spinning technology enabled the mass production of Ecodear 510, while Yoshida chose Ecodear 510 for its strength and quality.

In addition, the lining of this bag will be made from Toray Chemical's recycled nylon fibers, which are derived from waste materials such as fishing nets. The two companies will continue to work together to develop more environmentally friendly materials and products.

By using fewer fossil resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Toray and Yoshida are responding to the growing market demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. Toray is committed to improving people's quality of life and supporting sustainable economic growth by providing advanced technologies and materials that meet changing consumer preferences.
