Umm Al Quwain will ban single-use plastics from January 1, 2023.
All bags must be biodegradable, multi-purpose or made of paper or fabric, according to the decision of the Administrative Council of the Emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain.
Umm Al Qaiwain is one of the seven emirates of the UAE. Umm Al Qaiwain's ban follows similar bans in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
In Abu Dhabi, the ban on single-use plastics comes into effect on June 1, 2022, while in Dubai, retailers are charging 25 Phil per bag from July 1, 2022.
Starting next year, Umm Al Qaiwain outlets will have to charge an extra 25 Phil for each plastic bag used by customers. This is in preparation for a total ban on single-use plastic bags in the UAE.
