Recently, Envalior announced the launch of a new line of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) composites, Pocan® X-MB, based on biorecycled 1,4-butanediol (BDO).

The sustainable components of this thermoplastic have been certified and classified according to the ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) standard. Bio-cycled BDO is derived from waste cooking oil, which is a second-generation raw material that does not compete with food production.

In addition to waste cooking oil, Envalior is currently exploring other sources of sustainable ingredients, including post-consumer recycled materials (PCR).

Material innovations have a wide range of potential in typical PBT applications such as connectors and housings as well as structural and functional components.

For its part, Envalior says that the entire Pocan® range can be produced on a biorecycled BDO basis, including hydrolytically stabilized, flame-retardant and/or laser-transparent products, and that the carbon footprint of the new products is more than 30% less than that of equivalent standard composites. The products can be used in the automotive industry.
