Calculation of the Carbon Footprint of BASF Products: Certified by TÜV Rheinland as Complying with the Requirements of "Working Together for Sustainability
At the end of September, TÜV Rheinland, the German technical testing organization, confirmed that BASF's methodology for calculating and reporting the carbon footprint of its products fully complies with the specific requirements of "Together for Sustainability" (TfS). BASF was the first company to align its fully automated system for calculating the carbon footprint of its products with the requirements of the TfS.
This is because more and more BASF customers want to demonstrate in detail the carbon footprint of the BASF products they use, which include sneaker soles, insulation panels and detergents.
Under the joint initiative "Together for Sustainability", 47 chemical companies, including BASF, agreed by the end of 2022 on a globally harmonized standard for calculating the carbon footprint of their products. Product carbon footprints provide important information to guide emissions reductions along the value chain.
By calculating the carbon footprint, BASF has greater transparency when providing customers with specific emissions for each BASF product.
Susanne Jorre, Sustainability Manager at TÜV Rheinland, said, "BASF is the first company to be certified by TÜV Rheinland that its entire system for calculating the carbon footprint of its products complies with the TfS standard." From the beginning of October, BASF customers will receive reports on the carbon footprint of all products and compliance with the TfS standard, including the new TÜV declaration.
Dr. Christoph Jäkel, Vice President Corporate Sustainability at BASF, noted, "We are proud to be a pioneer in automated calculation of the carbon footprint of our products and to support our customers in achieving their CO2 reduction goals. This is another important milestone for BASF by calculating the carbon footprint of all 45,000 products sold using a TfS-compliant methodology."
"Together for Sustainability (TfS) is a global initiative by chemical companies to assess, audit and improve the sustainability practices of their global supply chains. Based on the principles of Responsible Care® and the United Nations Global Compact, the initiative has evolved into a global organization with regional representation in Asia as well as North and South America.
