According to news on April 23, Swedish company ICA is taking a step towards a more sustainable flower industry, replacing traditional plastic flower trays with Stora Enso's molded fiber trays. In the long term, the transition to molded fiber pallets means a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

By replacing polystyrene pallets with wood fiber pallets, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 81%.

As Sweden's first grocery chain, ICA Sweden will soon begin transitioning its tori to a more environmentally friendly molded fiber alternative. The change is part of ICA's efforts to reduce plastic use and promote more sustainable consumption. We are proud to be the first grocery retailer in Sweden to take a giant step towards more sustainable flower nutrition together with our talented growers and suppliers. The transition to wood fiber pallets will be gradual, with the first step being a few of our beautiful houseplants, followed by an ongoing switch to our summer florals,” says Sandra Kjellin, store floor manager at ICA Flowers Sweden.

The molded fiber pallets are manufactured in Sweden by Stora Enso and represent a ground-breaking innovation in the industry. Unlike traditional plastic trays, the tori is made from pressed wood fibers and is completely free of plastic and PFOS. Furthermore, it is produced with 100% green electricity and consists of sustainably sourced Nordic wood fibers.

“We are delighted to announce our partnership with ICA Sweden, a company leading the way in sustainability with our fiber flower trays. Every purchase not only blooms beautiful flowers, but also nourishes our planet. Together we are re- Defining environmentally friendly solutions, one pallet at a time,” said George Ribaeus Beri, Senior Business Development Manager at Stora Enso.
