Recently, Clariant launched Desi Pak® ECO desiccant packaged in non-plastic bags, thus further reducing the environmental impact of the desiccant. This is a new addition to Clariant's Desi Pak range of responsibly mined bentonite clay desiccants, which are natural desiccants with high adsorption properties that help manufacturers and distributors protect sealed packages from moisture damage.
This innovative bagged desiccant is packaged in bio-based paper bags with raw materials sourced from sustainable plants, using only water-based inks and adhesives, and is available in standard package sizes of 1 gram, 2 grams, 5 grams, 10 grams and 33 grams, as well as a variety of customized package sizes. The bags are filled with selected granular high grade bentonite. These bentonites are responsibly mined and processed in a streamlined manner. Natural bentonite desiccants offer higher moisture absorption and dehumidification efficiency than synthetic desiccants used in the most common packaging conditions.
"Damp proofing and dehumidification play an integral role in the supply chain, protecting moisture-sensitive products so that their quality and integrity are not compromised. It is well known that moisture damage to goods can have an environmental impact, creating waste when damaged goods are discarded and carbon emissions when new goods are produced to replace damaged goods."
Ryan Grauer, Sales, Marketing and Technical Manager, Cargo & Equipment Protection Business Unit, Clariant Adsorbents & Additives Business Unit, commented, "As the market demand for packaging solutions with smaller carbon footprints increases, we are very pleased to offer our customers a choice of biobased paper bagged desiccants, with which the packaging of our highly adsorbent natural bentonite desiccant can provide trusted protection for our customers' products."
Desi Pak ECO's new bagged desiccant is packaged in a new plastic-free, bio-based paper bag with non-toxic, water-based inks and water-based adhesives.
The new Desi Pak ECO bagged desiccant is the latest addition to Clariant's Desi Pak range of desiccant products in a variety of packaging sizes. The new desiccant is labeled with the EcoTain® label, indicating the product's superior sustainability benefits. Professionals conducted a life cycle assessment of Desi Pak ECO products based on desiccants manufactured in the United States. The results of the assessment show that bentonite mined responsibly has a simpler production process than synthetic desiccants, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint and lower energy consumption. In addition, the amount of water consumed in the production of the raw material is significantly reduced.
To further help its customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Clariant is expanding the use of raw materials with a lower environmental impact in packaging by applying them to desiccant transportation wrappers. The cartons used to transport Desi Pak ECO desiccant can be recycled, and the raw materials used to produce the cartons are sourced from sustainable plants. In addition, a cobalt chloride-free humidity display card is included in the packaging of Desi Pak ECO desiccant.
Desi Pak ECO bagged desiccant effectively protects against moisture and dehumidification, while the production and transportation of its packaging material reduces carbon emissions. Therefore, this type of desiccant can meet the needs of a wide range of applications, such as moisture control and dehumidification of garments, textiles, automobiles, machines, tools, health care products and foodstuffs. Upon request, we can also provide Desi Pak ECO bagged desiccant that meets specific requirements to ensure that the bagged bentonite desiccant complies with the relevant testing requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations) and U.S. Pharmacopoeia Chapter 670 for secondary packaging materials.
