May 23 - Fresh Del Monte Produce and the leader in bioactive substance biotechnology solutions have announced a new partnership focused on developing biofertilizers from pineapple pomace. The partnership, under the name De l'ora Bio, was established with the inauguration of a new biofertilizer plant in Kenya.
The plant, located at Fresh Del Monte's Kenyan subsidiary, Del Monte Kenya Ltd . Nearby, a variety of biofertilizers will be manufactured from pineapple cannery waste. The biofertilizers will be used by Fresh Del Monte and potentially sold to other growers in Kenya and East Africa.
Biofertilizers are natural alternatives to traditional fertilizers that use microorganisms to enhance plant growth by increasing nutrient availability, improving soil health and ultimately increasing yields.
Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman and CEO of Fresh Del Monte, said, “Fresh Del Monte is committed to the development of a circular economy and is actively seeking solutions to reuse and repurpose its residues. “We believe this collaboration represents an important step forward that has the potential to revolutionize agricultural practices. de l'ora Bio exemplifies our dedication to innovation, environmental stewardship and expanding the field of agriculture.”
According to Precedence Research, the global biofertilizers market is expected to reach USD 9.14 billion by 2032. This growth is attributed to increasing awareness about sustainable agricultural practices, rising demand for organic food, and government advocacy for the use of biofertilizers.
Through De l'ora Bio, Fresh Del Monte and Vellsam's goal is to maximize the use of pineapple pomace, improve soil fertility, and meet growing consumer demand for nutritious and sustainably grown products.
