On October 17, 2024, LG Chem partnered with a Korean cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredient company to develop 3HP ingredients for functional cosmetics.
The world's fourth-largest chemical maker, South Korea's LG Chem Co. Ltd. on Oct. 17 unveiled a plan to develop the world's first products using fully biobased 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) as a functional cosmetic ingredient. 3HP is produced by microbial fermentation of plant-based raw materials, such as corn-based glucose and crude glycerin.
LG said that 3HP has not yet been commercialized, although the chemical industry around the world is trying to develop technology for this environmentally friendly ingredient. Now, LG Chem has reached an agreement with local cosmetics and pharmaceutical ingredient maker Daebong LS Co. to jointly develop the ingredient for functional cosmetics. Shin Hak-chul, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Chem, said, “This collaboration is an important first step in developing sustainable raw materials for beauty products. We hope to expand applications to a variety of functional cosmetic ingredients based on clinical trials.”
