Suntory Group (Suntory) recently announced that it has manufactured a prototype PET bottle made from 100% plant-based materials.

This follows the company's commitment to use 100% sustainable PET plastic bottles for all product packaging globally by 2030 and to remove petroleum-based plastics from its supply chain management. This prototype PET bottle made of bio-based materials is a key step in achieving its 2030 vision.

Orangina's 100% plant-based PET bottle prototype, including the cap and label, is made of plant-based PET.

The prototype bottle is described as being produced for Suntory's iconic Orangina brand in Europe and its best-selling bottled mineral water, SuntoryTennensui, in Japan. The bottle also marks a breakthrough in Suntory's long-standing partnership with US-based sustainable technology company Anellotech.

PET is typically produced from two raw materials, 70% terephthalic acid (PTA) and 30% monoethylene glycol (MEG).

Suntory's prototype plant-based bottle is made in Japan under the Suntory Tennensui brand since 2013 by combining Anellotech's new technology, a plant-based paraxylene derived from wood chips (converted to plant-based PTA) and pre-existing plant-based MEG made from the molasses Suntory has been using.

"We are pleased with this result, which means we are one step closer to providing consumers with sustainable PET bottles. The significance of this technology is that PTA is produced from non-food biomass to avoid competition with the food chain and that MEG is also sourced from non-food grade raw materials." Tsunehiko Yokoi, executive officer of Suntory Group Manufacturing, said.
