Billerud presented a machine-glazed kraft paper specifically designed for packaging toilet paper and kitchen paper rolls. Reaching the sweet spot of sustainability - renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, and also able to withstand the same tough handling as any PE plastic.
"With this paper packaging solution, we can make it easy for brand owners to switch from plastic to paper packaging without having to compromise on performance. It offers customers an opportunity to grow their business through renewable and innovative applications that meet new consumer needs." said Danevert Åsbrink, senior director of product management at Billerud.
Toilet paper and kitchen paper rolls are consumed in large quantities every day. For brand owners, moving from plastic to paper packaging will mean significant sustainability gains, as well as meeting consumer preferences. An Ipsos global survey of 20,000 consumers (2021) shows that three quarters of consumers want to move away from single-use plastics. This new option from Billerud is therefore a powerful tool to bridge the gap between brands and consumers.
High strength fine paper
Sustainability and a low carbon footprint are obvious advantages, but the new packaging has even more to offer. Billerud's white, long, soft virgin fibers have excellent printability, and this packaging is sure to stand out on the shelf.
Equally important is that the package has the strength to withstand harsh handling conditions. Because of its long original fibers, drop tests show that this new paper is as flexible as PE plastic. Machine glazing makes the paper's surface super smooth and has a strong seal. In addition to minimizing the risk of damaging cargo, the paper is strong enough to use lighter weights and save resources.
