Origin Materials, a leading carbon-negative materials company whose goal is to drive the world's transition to sustainable materials; and Terphane, a subsidiary of Tredegar Corporation, a global leader in specialty PET polyester films ("BOPET"). The companies announced a strategic partnership to produce sustainable, high-performance bio-based polymer films.

As part of the partnership, Terphane signed a multi-year capacity reservation agreement for the purchase of advanced bio-based polymer PEF for use in the production of films, including food and beverage packaging and high-value industrial applications. BOPEF is both a biaxially oriented PEF and BOPET is a biaxially oriented PET. these oriented polymer films are favored for their strength, transparency, barrier and electrical insulation properties.

We are excited to be working with Terphane, a trusted global leader in thin films with a broad range of customer and partner relationships," said Origin Materials Co-CEO. We are excited to work with Terphane to develop advanced, high-performance products that will help realize a net-zero carbon materials economy. This partnership marks further progress in Origin Materials' mission to drive the world's transition to sustainable materials."

The development of this film is critical for us to meet the emerging global demand for sustainable flexible packaging solutions," said Terphane's global director of research and development. This film is partly made from PEF and has all the traditional properties of regular PET film, including post-consumer recyclability. In addition, PEF offers excellent heat resistance and superior barrier properties to extend the shelf life of packaged products. Initial tests conducted in the U.S. have proven that the material works well on extrusion lines."

Origin Materials' proprietary technology platform represents a potential breakthrough in cost competitiveness and commercialization of low-carbon PEF. Origin PEF is made from furandicarboxylic acid ("FDCA"), a polymer that combines sustainability and packaging performance characteristics, including enhanced barrier properties. Origin Materials' PEF is expected to be 100% plant-based and fully recyclable, offering attractive economics and a significant reduction in carbon footprint, as well as higher strength, better thermal properties and enhanced barrier properties compared to petroleum-based materials widely used today.
