Recently, SABIC joined forces with Lamb Weston, a major global brand owner and producer of frozen potato products, to utilize a closed-loop process for the manufacture of lightweight, sustainable pouches using a co-extruded film structure.
Of these, at least 60% of the packaging is made from polymers with waste cooking oil (UCO) as a bio-based feedstock.
Khaled Al Jalawi, global director of SABIC's Circular Economy business, said the project demonstrates the circular concept as it makes better use of waste cooking oil to produce recyclable recycled polymers, is designed through a closed-loop approach and has been awarded ISCC PLUS certification. According to Sebastiaan Besems, Lamb Weston's commercial vice president for EMEA, the innovation reduces the carbon footprint of our retail bags by 30%, in line with consumer expectations for FMCG brands to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
The success of the project is also in line with our goal to halve food waste by 2030, reduce our overall product carbon footprint by 25%, and shift to more circular production.
