Starting today, New Zealand will be the first country in the world to ban consumers from using plastic continuous roll bags for fresh produce in supermarkets.
In 2018, New Zealand began phasing out plastic microbeads, and in 2019, plastic shopping bags once. in October 2022, PVC food containers and PS takeaway cutlery will be phased out.
Starting July 1, 2023, plastic continuous roll bags used for fresh produce (some supermarkets use paper bags, while others encourage consumers to bring their own reusable bags, etc.), plastic cutlery and straws will be banned, and the labeling of fresh produce will begin to switch to compostable varieties.
People with disabilities and other health impairments will still have access to plastic straws once they need them.
