Recently, TotalEnergies Corbion (TEC), a producer of polylactic acid (PLA), and Benvic, a French producer of modified plastics, announced a partnership aimed at expanding the use of Luminy® PLA-based plastics in durable goods applications in the automotive, healthcare, cosmetic packaging, home appliances, and electrical and electronic products. automotive, healthcare, cosmetics packaging, appliances, and durable goods such as electrical and electronic products. The partnership marks an important step in the advancement of sustainable materials.
Benvic plans to incorporate TEC's Luminy® PLA into its Plantura bio-based plastics product line and compound it with other bio-based materials. These solutions offer the durable goods industry a lower carbon footprint alternative to traditional fossil-based ABS, PS and PP plastics,“ said Eric Grange, Marketing Director at Benvic, ”We strongly believe in the future of bio-based materials. We are confident in exploring new market opportunities, strengthening our market position and providing our customers with high performance sustainable materials." Hao Ding, Global Marketing Director at TEC, noted, “We believe we can accelerate the adoption of PLA in key industries, demonstrating its additional benefits beyond packaging and food tableware.”
TotalEnergies Corbion plant in Rayong, Thailand
Headquartered in the Netherlands, TEC has a 75,000 tons per year PLA production facility in Rayong, Thailand. Its Luminy® PLA products, which range from heat-resistant to standard grades, are used in a variety of markets including packaging, consumer goods, fibers, and automotive.PLA is ideal for use in fruit packaging, food tableware, consumer durables, toys, and 3D printing, among others, due to its biodegradable and compostable properties. In addition, TotalEnergies Corbion recycles resources through a hydrolysis depolymerization process that recovers in-house waste at its Thailand plant.
It is worth noting that TEC is actively exploring applications in other areas as well.
In the packaging sector, TEC is engaged in collaborative projects with a wide range of companies. in March 2024, it partnered with Sansu, a South Korean bottled water brand, to develop label-less bottled water bottles with a raised design.
In February 2025, UK water company Win Win Water launched a PLA bottle for naturally alkaline mineral water. The PLA mineral water bottle, including the body, label and cap, is made from PLA supplied by TEC.
In the consumer goods sector, TEC also has a number of practical examples of cooperation.2022 In November, it entered into a long-term partnership with the Korean company Be Good Friends (BGF), which has launched a disposable noodle cup for the Korean market that is produced with high-temperature-resistant PLA as the base resin.
In addition, TEC has entered into a strategic partnership with Beijing Blue Crystal Microbial Technology Co., Ltd. to integrate resources and jointly promote the development of PLA and PHA applications in the Chinese market. The cooperation between TEC and Benvic not only opens a new path for the application of PLA composites in the field of durable goods, but also reflects TotalEnergies' diversified strategic layout in the field of sustainable materials and energy. With the deepening of the cooperation, it is expected to contribute more innovative solutions for global sustainable development.
