June 11, 2024 - U.S. Plastics Pact, Inc. has released its latest Strategic Initiative Roadmap 2.0, designed to help companies change the way they design, use and reuse packaging plastics. It focuses on practical measures to change the use of plastics.

Roadmap 2.0 goes into effect on January 1, 2026.

This is an extension of the Roadmap 2025, launched earlier, which has made significant progress in the plastics cycle. As a result, the use of problematic or unnecessary plastics has been reduced from 14% to 8% in the last four years. The amount of reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging has jumped significantly from 37% to 47.7%. In addition, the recycled content of packaging has increased from 7% to 9.4%.

Building on these achievements, Roadmap 2.0 sets several ambitious goals along the way. It proposes to design and manufacture all plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable. It aims to eliminate problematic plastics and reduce virgin plastics by 30 percent by 2030. In addition, it intends to establish the necessary infrastructure to recycle at least half of all plastic packaging.

Emily Tipaldo, Executive Director of the Plastics Convention of the United States, said that Roadmap 2.0, with reuse as its main goal, was a step forward. In addition, he reiterated his commitment to working with its promoters and stakeholders to achieve ambitious goals.

Regarding the U.S. Plastics Agreement.

The U.S. Plastics Pact is a solutions-driven consortium launched in partnership with the Recycling Partnership and the World Wildlife Fund as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Global Plastics Pact Network. It brings together businesses, nonprofits, research institutions, government agencies, and other partners to rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastics, and to blaze a trail toward a circular economy for plastics in the United States.
